Support for refugees

UCL participates in Higher Education in Emergencies, a global movement that aims to promote refugee’s access to higher education.

While one in three young people in the world access higher education, only 1% of young refugees have access to higher education.

Access to higher education for refugees is essential.

In the short term, the movement promotes host country social integration in line with refugees’ talents and skills; in the long term, it trains future leaders, entrepreneurs and other talented individuals who are needed to (re)build the home country.

Food, shelter and clothing needs are often immediate. However, educational needs are equally important.

Only educational institutions can meet such needs. It is essential that universities concentrate their efforts on initiatives that they alone can carry out.

UCL refugee support projects are led by the Pro-Rector for International Affairs Professor Dana Samson, who is responsible for human rights issues.

In order to centralise association requests and university community proposals, a single point of entry to the university was created. This is the email address soutien-aux-refugies@uclouvain.be . Any association or person with a request or proposal is invited to send an email.
