Former Yaounde seminars

This year, the Université Catholique de Louvain is celebrating the 500 years of the publication of Thomas More's Utopia and we are happy to contribute to this celebration by organizing an event on the broad and fascinating topic of Utopias. We are open to any approach and angle to the topic of Utopias. But you will find in the list below some topics that would be a welcome addition to the discussions.

The history of utopias: Which utopias have inspired our world? What is outdated, or on the contrary timeless, in the utopias of Thomas More, utopian socialist Charles Fourier and others?

The force of utopias: A theory is often described as utopian to denigrate it. What should we think of the prospects and merits of utopian theories? What can utopian and dystopian theorists hope to achieve?

Plural utopias: Which insights are shared by socialist, feminist, postcolonial, green, religious and liberal utopia? On which aspects do they part ways? Which other kinds of utopias do we lack?

Ideal Theories and Utopias: What are the methodological similarities and differences between utopian theories and ideal theories? What makes one or the other more suitable to inspiring and informing politics?

Utopian experiments: What can we learn from “utopian experiments”, socialist settlements and communes? What role can utopian experimenters have in the struggle for social justice?

African utopias: Which utopias and dystopias can be found in the African continent, either in traditional cultures, in anti-colonialist and pan-African movements, or in postcolonial thinking and literature?

Si les réflexions féministes consacrées aux inégalités fondées sur le genre, et aux structures économiques et sociales qui maintiennent voire renforcent ces inégalités, ont largement contribué à enrichir notre compréhension des exigences qui sous-tendent les idéaux de justice sociale et d’équité, force est de constater que les approches axées sur le genre demeurent encore relativement marginalisées et font rarement l’objet d’une attention et d’une intégration systématiques au sein des théories contemporaines de la justice. Pourtant, la force critique des perspectives féministes développées au cours des dernières décennies ainsi que leur posture épistémologique et méthodologique constituent des apports incontournables pour toute théorie de la justice qui prétend réellement adresser le problème des inégalités au niveau domestique ou au niveau global.

En effet, la réduction des inégalités économiques et sociales injustes ne suppose pas seulement la satisfaction des besoins élémentaires et un accès aux soins, elle implique aussi, de manière centrale, de reconnaître les formes insidieuses de domination et de discrimination qui ne sont pas le résultat d’intentions individuelles mais de processus économiques, institutionnels et sociaux (Young, 2006). En ce sens, la réduction des inégalités exige une analyse précise du contexte structurel dans lequel ces inégalités prennent place afin de dégager rigoureusement les déterminants socioculturels de la santé et plus largement de la pauvreté. Plus encore, la prise en compte de la condition spécifique des femmes, caractérisée trop souvent par un désavantage et une plus grande vulnérabilité face à la pauvreté et à ses risques inhérents de privations relatives ou absolues, et la lutte contre leur enfermement dans une posture passive et subordonnée constituent deux facteurs décisifs pour appréhender les enjeux actuels que soulève le problème de la pauvreté mondiale (Sen, 2009). À cet égard, il nous faut remarquer que les institutions politiques et économiques peinent bien souvent à considérer ces facteurs et la faible présence des femmes dans les instances décisionnelles tend à rendre invisible leur situation et inaudible leur voix.

Après avoir dédié ses premières éditions aux théories de la justice globale (2012) et aux agents de la justice (2013), la troisième édition du séminaire doctoral bilingue The Yaoundé PhD Seminar – Theories of Justice sera consacré au thème « Justice et genre » et abordera la question de la représentation des femmes au sein des institutions gouvernementales et, plus centralement, au sein des milieux académiques et scientifiques ainsi que la question des apports multidimensionnels des théories féministes et des théories du genre pour les théories de la justice aux niveaux domestique et global. Le séminaire sera également l’occasion d’une rencontre entre les approches féministes occidentales et celles des pays en développement et d’une étude comparative entre leurs priorités, leurs catégories conceptuelles et leurs outils analytiques respectifs mais il sera aussi l’occasion de faire naitre entre elles un véritable dialogue pour appréhender ensemble le progrès de la situation des femmes dans le monde et penser la perspective du féminisme international.

Si les théories politiques et morales ont largement consisté à définir les principes de la justice en identifiant les droits fondamentaux et les obligations qui y correspondent, elles ont en revanche accordé un peu moins d’intérêt à la question des agents de la justice, c’est-à-dire les agents moraux, individuels ou institutionnels, sur lesquels doivent reposer les obligations de justice. La question de savoir ce que nous devons les uns aux autres (Scanlon, 1998) a suscité plus d’attention que celle de savoir qui doit effectivement quoi à celui dont un droit est identifié. Un certain flou demeure donc quant à l’identification des agents de la justice, sans doute parce qu’on estime qu’il revient d’emblée à l’Etat, source du droit et signataire des conventions internationales relatives aux droits, de prendre en charge toutes les obligations de justice. (O’Neill, 1999). Après avoir consacré sa première édition aux théories de la justice globale, la seconde édition du séminaire doctoral bilingue et international The Yaoundé Phd Seminar – theories of Justice tentera de se pencher sur les critères permettant d’identifier les différents agents de la justice, aussi bien sur le plan global que sur le plan national autour de trois activités principales : des cours, des présentations de projets et des rétroactions sur les projets soumis. Du 26 au 31 août 2013, Le séminaire réunira pendant une semaine une quarantaine de chercheurs et de doctorants du Cameroun, de la République Centrafricaine, de la République Démocratique du Congo, de la Belgique, de la France, du Canada, du Royaume-Uni, de la Suisse, de l'Irlande. Ce séminaire est sponsorisé par la Fondation Bernheim, la Chaire Hoover d’éthique économique et sociale (UCL), le Centre de Recherche en éthique de l’Université de Montréal (CREUM), Thomas Ferretti, Tim Meijers, Axel Gosseries, Nicholas Vrousalis, Yannick Vanderbourght, Philippe Coppens, Henri Culot, Maxime Lambrecht, Richard Keva.
