Jani Turunen (SUDA, University of Stockholm), Shared physical custody and children’s wellbeing in Sweden

À 12h45, LECL 61

Sweden has one of the highest parental union dissolution rates in the world but also the highest prevalence of shared physical custody arrangements after divorce or separation. Over a third of all children with divorced or separated parents live equal time in both parental households. In this  presentation we will explore links between type of custody or residential arrangements and child outcomes with focus on two factors that have been suggested to mediate this relationship; parenting quality and inter-parental relationship. The presentation is based on two separate studies of shared physical custody in Sweden. First we will analyze differences in perceived parental support and knowledge among children in Sweden living in seven different family types. We used data from the Swedish HBSC survey from 2013/14. Second we will present findings from a study on children’s self-reported stress in different post-divorce residential settings, including shared physical custody, controlling for parental conflict level. We use data from the Swedish Level of Living Surveys from 2001-2003.
