The CENTAL is a computing centre attached to the Faculté de Philosophie et Lettres and specialized in the study of Natural Language Processing, a discipline recently brought to the eyes of the public through commercial applications such as spellchecking, speech recognition, machine translation, information retrieval, etc.

As a university centre, the CENTAL is involved in both research and teaching activities. It also collaborates on projects from several research centres within the Faculté de Philosophie et Lettres by offering its experience in text data processing.  Les contacts spécifiques avec des entreprises belges sont nombreux, prestations ponctuelles (consultations, analyse, ...), activités de conseil (guidance scientifique de plus ou moins longue durée) ou projets de recherche et développement.

The CENTAL is a research structure newly established on the foundations of a centre created at the end of the sixties which was specialized in latin data databases creation. It was called the CETEDOC (Centre de traitement électronique des documents or Centre for electronic document processing). Nowadays, the CENTAL has broadened its research field to modern languages and linguistic engineering.
