Short Introduction to Biographic-Narrative-Interpretive Method (BNIM) of Interviewing
Tanja Vuckovic Juros
Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research Fellow
Résumé :
Biographic-Narrative-Interpretive Method (BNIM) of interviewing and data analysis was developed by a British social scientist Tom Wengraf, building on the interactionist and phenomenological tradition of the Berlin QuaText: Institute for qualitative social research, and particularly on the work of Gabriele Rosenthal and Wolfram Fischer-Rosenthal. This presentation will focus on the interviewing process using BNIM, and it will present its main principles and guidelines. Biographic – narrative – interpretive method of interviewing is a method of unstructured interviewing that is, nevertheless, characterized by rather strict set of rules intended to help the interviewer obtain the 'dated located situated subjectivity' of the research participants. The main advantage of this method is its ability to gain rich material in which the voice of the research participant is of paramount importance, while at the same time providing the interviewer with the tools to go beyond the surface of the narrative as presented by the research participant.
Présentation de l'intervenante :
Tanja Vuckovic Juros is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow developing a project on the reception and perception of same-sex marriage in different institutional contexts, and on the effect this may have on changing models of family norms. This project currently focuses on the migrants from Central and Eastern European countries with a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage who now live in a same-sex marriage or who are raising children with a same-sex partner in Belgium. Her previous projects included the examination of educational trajectories of the disadvantaged youth, and the formation of collective memories of difficult Yugoslav past among the new Croatian generations.
