With the support of the National Fund for Economic Research (FNRS), CRIDES and IRES assembled a research team working in the field of Law and Economics. We are organizing a one-day workshop on the Economic consequences of Legal Development to be held at the Université catholique de Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) on September 28th, 2018.

St. Bishoi (Paisios) is one of the most renowned Egyptian monastics of the fifth century. He has been consistently venerated in the Orthodox East over the centuries, and today he remains one of the most popular saints among Egypt’s Christians. This paper explores the Arabic recensions of the Life of St. Bishoi based on the oldest available manuscripts. It identifies its various recensions, and charts the arc of his Life in the extant Greek, Syriac, and Ethiopic versions.

Bishop Demetrius of Alexandria (189-232) is best known for his contentious interactions with the renowned theologian, Origen. Among Egypt’s Christians, however, Demetrius is best remembered as the married pope, and as an ecclesiastical reformer. This lecture traces the evolving biography of Demetrius through Greek, Coptic, and Arabic sources spanning a millennium.
