Abstract:

Statistical graphics is communication. Analysts have to see patterns in data and models and they have to communicate these patterns to others, statisticians or not. Effective statistical graphics combines efficient perception and information design. In this talk, I shall develop a minimal theory of perception in the context of statistical graphics and show how respecting or violating the associated rules makes visual communication either easy and effective or impossible. This talk is a revised version of an annual presentation. So, if you have seen it last year, you won't learn much new. However, if it is ten years ago, you might enjoy some newer insights.
