CORE is uniquely focused on research, and its management is informal and collegial. The President (always a permanent UCL faculty member), assisted by the administrative director, represents the Center within the University and handles all institutional matters, staff and interaction with authorities.

The Research Director is responsible for the scientific leadership of the Center and, together with co-directors and faculty, initiates, leads and promotes scientific events, projects and networks.

His/her responsibilities include coordination and animation of the research groups, initiating, supporting or supervising current or new initiatives such as the organization of scientific events (e. g., conferences, lecture series, summer schools), the creation or strengthening of international research networks, the development of new research themes, encouraging applications to national or international funding opportunities, the supervision of the visitor program, etc.

The tradition at CORE is that every other Research Directors is recruited externally, typically among former visitors, and invited for a period of two years with a substantially reduced teaching load. That practice has proved highly beneficial: an external Research Director contributes with new perspectives, local habits come regularly under question and scrutiny, and new practices emerge. Of course he/she also pursues his/her own research in collaboration with CORE members and visitors, and promotes scientific and human connections between his/her home institution and CORE.

Finally, the research director is in charge of the annual report, which provides a detailed yearly description of the center's academic output and scientific impact.
