Multidisciplinarity in religious studies is an old tradition at the Catholic University of Louvain. From the outset, classical research in the Faculty of Theology has always be linked with diverse disciplines, such as philosophy, history, philology, law, then psychology and sociology. More recently, in the 1980s, at the initiative of Professors Jean Remy and Liliane Voyé, the Social Sciences and Religious Studies Group (GSSR) was also founded at the Faculty of Economics and Social and Political Sciences, which federated many disciplines and allowed to create a community of researchers in religious thematics. The same applies to the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World (founded by Prof. Felice Dassetto), which has gathered various disciplines for the study of Islam. There is also the case with the multidisciplinary approach of the Center for Religious Psychology (founded by Prof. Antoine Vergote in 1961).
The research institute Religions, Spiritualities, Cultures, Societies (RSCS) intends to inspire itself of all these experiences to organize an original multidisciplinary approach. One of the main challenge for this approach in RSCS is to continuously improve fruitful interactions between theological and narrative analysis with other scientific disciplines, open to a variety of religious traditions, ranging from Judaism and Christianity to Islam, and also Buddhism and Hinduism.
