Objectives of the Institute

IRSS

Context :

The UCL Institute of Health and Society (IRSS) provides high-quality, multidisciplinary research and scientific capacity building aimed at improving both the quality of life of individuals and also population health through innovation in public health and healthcare that is both socially responsible and evidence-based.

The IRSS was established in 2010 and influenced by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) definition of health: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (Preamble to the Constitution of WHO as adopted by the International Health Conference, New York, 19 June; signed on 22 July 1946 by the representatives of 61 States. Official Records of WHO, no. 2, p. 100). This definition includes physical, mental, and social dimensions as well as themes in health and well-being - both individual and collective. The objective of the Institute is to develop research activities aimed at improving understanding within these dimensions and the complex interactions that link them to individuals and the population.

Goals:

The Institute aims to become a research centre of excellence in its field through international publications, PhD projects, scientific research, and participation in international research programmes, and also through the development of a network of collaborations.

Its main objectives are to:

- Promote excellence in scientific output
- Support the capacity building among young researchers, with a long-term perspective
- Disseminate socially-relevant and useful scientific findings
