Whole Slide Imaging (WSI) technology allows the recording of entire histological sections. The main advantage over traditional microscopy pictures (pathologists or researchers selecting “interesting” fields) is to make the analysis independent of choices made by the first observer. In addition to viewing the entire section at low magnification, it is also possible to look at details of selected areas with higher magnification (digital zoom), while maintaining a very good resolution. Moreover, the comparison of images, such as different stainings performed on adjacent sections, is greatly facilitated, as images can be placed side by side on the same computer screen and synchronized.
Digitalized images of entire sections can be viewed and stored, but also shared, which is a precious tool for collaborative studies, teaching and publishing. In addition, all content of the digitalized images can be exploited in a standardized and fast way using dedicated softwares for quantitative measurements such as surfaces, cell numbers, biomarkers, vasularization, fibrosis,….
