Benoît Kabamba-Mukadi, PI

Professor Kabamba Mukadi Benoît is clinical lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of UCL and he is head of the laboratory of microbiology of the St Luc-UCL university clinics. He teaches the medical microbiology to the bachelor students in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and biomedical sciences. Following his research mainly focused in virology on the place of the clinical use of the human immunodeficiency virus provirus in the management of infected patients, his research has focused on the field of viral hepatitis B and C and the study of the epidemiology of infections with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Bartonella henselae in Belgium. Lyme Borreliosis is the first vector disease in Europe, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato transmitted by tick bite mainly of the Ixodes genus, whereas cat scratch disease (CSD) occurs mainly in the form of Lymphadenopathy is caused by Bartonella henselae. The development of new diagnostic tools for the clinical management of these infections is at the heart of its projects. Professor Kabamba Mukadi Benoît leads several laboratories that have been recognized since 2011 as the National Reference Centre (CNR) Borrelia burgdorferi together with UZ Leuven and CNR viral hepatitis in association with the Viral Disease department of the Institute of Public Health. He collaborates with the Institute of Public Health in a continuous program of epidemiological surveillance at national as well as European levels. The new tools mainly include molecular typing of pathogens, detection of drug resistance mutations and, more recently, by the introduction of new generation sequencing (NGS).
