The placenta from every angle

A recent publication by UCLouvain’s Prof. Greet Kerckhofs reports on a new method for observing mouse placentas during growth: a three-dimensional, non-invasive and quantitative virtual histology. This is a breakthrough that makes Prof. Kerckhofs a pioneer of 3D histology of biological tissues.

High-resolution contrast-enhanced microCT reveals the true three-dimensional morphology of the murine placenta

This paper describes an innovative 3D imaging technique that allows, non-invasively, to visualize biological tissues, to characterize their 3D microstructure and to analyse spatial relationships between tissues. We call this technique "virtual 3D histology". The imaging methodology (stains, imaging protocol, image analysis) has been developed by the research group of Prof. G. Kerckhofs (UCLouvain, iMMC).

Will hydrogen finally establish itself in the energy transition?

Prof. Joris Proost (UCLouvain-iMMC), Belgium's representative for the 'hydrogen' theme within the IEA, contributed to the first report on hydrogen at released at the G20 Ministerial Meeting on Energy Transitions and Global Environment for Sustainable Growth.

Greener hydrogen

Hydrogen could play a key role in decarbonising the chemical industry and storing green electricity. But there is still some way to go to improve sector capacities and lower production costs. A new electrode design involved in water electrolysis could help.
