He attempts to highlight and to explain the molecular mechanisms induced by physical activity that lead to muscle hypertrophy and remodelling or, conversely, to muscle atrophy during a prolonged physical inactivity or during aging. The ultimate goal is to highlight the fundamental processes by which exercise exerts its beneficial effects on health. This research contributes to identify useful drug targets and leads to the justification for using exercise as a tool for primary and secondary prevention.
Meanwhile, Marc Francaux has developed an applied research aimed at optimizing athletic performance. This research program is based on knowledge acquired in the more fundamental work and makes the link between the activity of his laboratory and sports federations, trainers and athletes.
